Senior lawyers to refuse legal aid work on homicide, guns, or gangs offences
Posted June 3, 2009 - A Toronto Star article says that criminal lawyers with 10 or more years' experience will no longer perform legal aid work for people charged with homicide, guns, or gangs offences, giving provincial underfunding as the reason.

Brochure sets out myths and facts about homelessness and poverty
Posted May 29, 2009 - The Cambridge Action on Homelessness Group (CAHG) has created a brochure it hopes will increase awareness of homelessness and poverty issues in the community. Although the data pertains mainly to Cambridge, CAHG believes other groups and areas might find the brochure an interesting and useful model.

Canadian Council for Refugees addresses recent challenges to refugee claim system

World Refugee Day highlights human story of refugees and their needs
Posted May 26, 2009 - Despite the efforts of many, the needs of refugees worldwide are far from being met. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees will observe World Refugee Day on June 20, focusing on these needs through its theme "Real People, Real Needs."

Federal government to clamp down on foreign worker program
Posted May 25, 2009 - An article in the Toronto Star reports that the federal government is planning tighter restrictions on job offers to foreign workers in an attempt to discourage fraud and clamp down on those who try to bypass the rigorous immigrant selection system introduced last year.

Photo exhibit documents Canadian immigrants separated from their children
Posted May 12, 2009 - Waiting For My Children is a photo-document project and entry in the Contact 2009 photography festival. The exhibit is on display from May 13 to 23 in Toronto and is also available online. It focuses on 11 newcomers to Canada, most of whom now live in the downtown east side of Toronto, and who are waiting for their children to arrive from Africa.

New protections for temp agency workers passed by the Ontario legislature
Posted May 7, 2009 - The Workers' Action Centre has long pushed for changes that would bring temp workers' rights and protections more in line with other workers and says that the new law is a good start in improving protection for temp agency workers.
